So, Aldo Zilli has teamed up with myhotel for a Brighton venture that’s not only got a cafe under his supervision but also a full-blown restaurant, Norman Cook is rumoured to have bought his favourite sushi restaurant, Okinami and Essex boy turned celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver is poised to open a restaurant here too. Never has the term, London by the Sea seemed so appropriate. One thing's for certain. Love them or loathe them there are soon going to be plenty of celebrity chefs at Brighton restaurants. But is the celebrity attack on the Brighton restaurants scene a good thing? And does Brighton really want to be like London?
The best Brighton restaurants have always prided themselves on their passion for good food, fresh ingredients, inventive recipes and excellent service. In fact, whatever your food preferences or dietary requirements, there are few UK cities that are so capable of delivering a decent quality meal as Brighton. But it has always been done with the modesty that Brighton as a city prides itself on. Terre a Terre has been quietly winning awards for years as has Sam Metcalfe’s sevendials.
However, it took Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares to highlight what many locals had suspected for years – not only were some Brighton restaurants underperforming service-wise safe in the knowledge that there would always be another influx of tourists but the food they were serving wasn’t up to scratch either. Cue swearing, tantrums, tears, streams of Ramsay’s sentences ending with a yes? and at the end of it all, two of Brighton’s most profitable restaurants – Momma Cherris and Loves Fish Restaurant.
If the latest spate of celebrities heading to Brighton and the television phenomenon proves anything it’s that celebrity chefs at Brighton restaurants aren't about to go away any time soon. But as to whether it’s a good thing, it looks like we’re going to have to suck it and see.
The beauty and magic of Brighton restaurants is that the ones that are unique and serve delicious food without any fuss or poncyness of London, so hopefully the celebrity trend won't catch on because its a recipe for disaster.
I think its high time some celeb restaurants came to Brighton, it will mean that if you want to go somewhere special for an occassion, you don't have to trudge up to London every time.
Wasn't Denise Van Outen involved with this as well? I swear I read that somewhere... Any ideas, people?
