Oscars: The Aftermath
So, awards season is finally over for another year. On Sunday night I watched the Oscars armed with a bag of frozen Maltesers (the only way to eat them), a two litre bottle of Coke and some rather disgusting Pringles (steak and caramelised onion flavour – note to self: never again) and accompanied by a few like-minded Oscars fanatics on the internets. Needless to say, I was thrilled for the Coens (they've been my favourite directors since Miller's Crossing in 1991) and absolutely delighted when …

The Oscars are Back On and a Kid’s Book on the Big Screen

Films seen so far this year: 51 (which is, fascinatingly, an average of exactly one a day).

Awards season: Finally, the Oscars
You could be forgiven for being a little bored with awards season at this point but the end is finally in sight, as the Oscars are televised this Sunday (1am onwards on some extortionate Murdoch-owned channel – do what I do and watch it round a friend's house). It looked like it was touch and go for a while there, but the Writers' Strike has been resolved in the nick of time, leading to huge sighs of relief all round, not least from me. Awards season: The BAFTAs
So, the BAFTAs have come and gone in what must surely be one of the fairest ceremonies in years, with almost all the main films picking up a prize in what seemed like the most appropriate category for each. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor as expected but I was delighted that Marion Cotillard did indeed win Best Actress for La Vie En Rose - I may actually have whooped. I was equally pleased for the Coen Brothers

Awards season: The Home Stretch Again
In addition to the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week, we also had the Directors Guild Awards, which, again, are traditionally seen as a strong indicator of who will win Best Director on Oscar night, because the same people do the voting in both cases. This year, the Directors Guild gave the Best Picture award to No Country For Old Men and the Coen Brothers picked up …

Quantum of Solace - Should They Have Stuck With Bond 22?

Awards season: The Home Stretch
With the Screen Actors Guild Awards announced last Sunday, this year's Awards Season officially entered the home stretch. The SAGs are widely regarded as the best guide to who's going to walk off with the acting awards on Oscar night because the voting pool is exactly the same in both cases. With that in mind, it does indeed look as if the golden fellas will be going to Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie Christie this year, though I still hope that Marion Cotillard wins for La Vie En Rose (not that Julie doesn't deserve it, but she already has an Oscar …
