The ViewBrighton Review

StarStarStarStarNo Star
Review byjohn gough02/10/2007
As might be expected from a members’ club in ritzy St James’s, Aura offers an exclusive and unique clubbing experience.

The Venue
Aura couldn’t be located anywhere more upmarket - standing in the shadows of the Ritz Hotel, in the basement under Caviar House.

The velvet rope on the pavement is drawn back for those lucky enough to be on the guestlist to descend into the extravagant bar-club area, which appears as if by magic from 11pm every night. Before this time, Aura is a restaurant, whose tables disappear at the touch of a button. The decor is sumptuous, incorporating the original chandeliers from Claridges Ballroom, which are a major talking point.

The Atmosphere
Aura attracts a sophisticated crowd – some major celebrities have been spotted here, such as Naomi Campbell and Christina Aguilera, and their presence has helped the club maintain favour with a more mature cross-section of the jet set.

Dancing doesn’t really get going until about midnight, and the dance area is small, but the feel is fun-loving and hedonistic. It can be hard to get to the bar; however, the staff are quick and friendly once you fight your way past the crowd. The door staff are pretty easygoing if you’re on the guestlist, and will always find you a taxi when the time comes to leave.

The Music
The DJs here play a nice mix throughout the evening, from ambient jazz to funky house alongside urban, RnB and chart tunes. The key with the music policy is that it’s accessible to the full range of people the club attracts – from older, wealthy businessmen to the 18-year-old socialite, everyone will get up for a dance.

The Drink
Aura is predictably pricey, as you’d imagine for a private members club in St. James’s. That said, the door staff can be flexible on who pays the entrance fee if you’re in a mixed group, usually letting ladies in for free, and a vodka-mixer starts at £11. The prices are worth it because Aura stands out from the rest of London’s finest. They have their own barrel of Jack Daniels - imported from Tennessee - over 50 rums to choose from, and a cigar range including some from Fidel Castro’s own collection.

The Last Word
Aura offers a sophisticated and refined alternative to its West End rivals, with an exceptional choice of drinks, staff that go out of their way to help, and a glamorous clientele. Worth the money!
