The ViewBrighton Review

Review byNatalie Barnes10/04/2008
The second incarnation of the legendary Concorde (the old beach hut style club from which Big Beat was born) still draws in the best local and national talent to its no-frills space.

The Venue
It may be out of the way in Brighton terms but Concorde 2 has its finger firmly on the pulse with live music earlier in the evening making way for club nights that continue well into the next day. Music fans have a lot of good reasons to make the trek down Madeira Drive. First a Victorian teahouse, then a biker cafe, this spacious two-room venue situated at the bottom of Madeira Drive seems to have found its true calling as Brighton’s number one live music venue. Renowned as an exciting showcase for new and upcoming bands, as well as a regular haunt for the more established ones, loyal music lovers provide a solid fan base ensuring that the club is rarely empty.

The People
Live music fans spanning every genre from rock to reggae make the pilgrimage to Concorde 2 on a regular basis, knowing that this is the place to spot the next big things before they ascend the dizzying ladder to global domination. When they head home, energetic club kids take their place, all aglow at the DJing talent that's about to whip them into a frenzy.

The Music
The music is loud, the talent undeniable and the genres fast and furious. In any given week, you can expect to find kool-kat funksters, shaggy haired rockers, pained-looking emos, baggy-jeaned, big trainered hip hoppers and fluoro-clad clubbers.

The Drink
Don’t expect to be overwhelmed by the choice of cocktails or salivating at an exciting food menu - the focus here is on the stage. The bar at Concorde 2 serves up big plastic beer glasses with foam running down the side, not fruity Martinis in exotic fruit flavours. If you’re unimpressed, you’re in the wrong place.

The Last Word
Supporters of new and existing talent head to Concorde 2 for an energetic mosh, to have a drunken chat with a friendly random (whose older brother’s best friend went to school with the lead singer of that band) and to see the best acts you’ll find in town. Afer, they leave the club kids shimmy in and the party punches on through till dawn.
