The ViewBrighton Review
One of the well worn favourites on the Brighton pub scene, the Basketmakers Arms is what boozers should all be like. The VenueMost true Brightonian pub favourites are a little tucked away – probably because that way the tourists don't find out about them. The Basketmakers is a family run pub and that comes though in the friendly, comfortable and relaxed feel of the place. It's a classic old low-ceilinged pub with a host of pictures and pub memorabilia on the walls.
Real ale is a main attraction here and food is served from midday till late in the afternoon. It's a mixed crowd from dads and their sons to students and real ale lovers. Refreshingly, all of the staff are helpful and friendly and really know their stuff.
The Food and DrinkThere's a good range of lagers and bitters on tap, including San Miguel, Fosters, Staropramen, Fellers ESB, London Pride, Directors and Discovery. There's also Glaes HSB and Butser and guest ales on rotation. But it's not just all about beer, they also offer over 90 Scottish and Irish malt whiskies and ten American bourbons.
The food is locally sourced and organic ingredients are used where possible. It's delicious and well-priced with mains such as chicken and ham pie coming in at around £6.00. For a cheaper option there are burgers, jacket potatoes and Ploughmans lunch from around £3.00 and sandwiches for just £2.00-£4.00.
The Last WordA local favourite for all the right reasons, The Basketmakers Arms wholeheartedly deserves its reputation. Long may it flourish for many years to come.
