The ViewBrighton Review
If you love an Irish tipple or two then the Black Horse is the perfect pub for you. Best of all, if you have a few too many and can't face the thought of a taxi you can always book a bed for the night at their guest house. The VenueThe Irish-owned, independently run Black Horse in Kemp Town is a pub as well as a guest house. It’s popular with the local Irish community, with both Sky Sports and Setanta on the two 32’’ screens showing everything from horseracing and rugby to hurling and Gaelic football.
Previously a spit'n'sawdust pub, the place was refurbished three years ago and consists of a traditional bar area where you can catch old-timers playing dominoes and a more contemporary style lounge bar. They also host music and cabaret nights which tend to be great fun particularly after a few whiskeys.
The PeopleA fair few Irish accents abound, punters generally call each other horse and if you don't know why then don't try and imitate them. Cheering on the Irish is compulsory when all eyes are glued to the screen whether it's hurling or horseracing and this pub really does embody all the things that make the Emerald Isle great - from camarederie to a cracking pint of the black stuff followed by a whiskey chaser.
The DrinkAt the pumps there’s a choice of Guinness, Fosters, Kronenbourg, John Smiths and Strongbow. Bottles increase the selection with an offering of Holsten Pils, Becks, Budweiser and Magners. Irish whiskeys are plentiful including Jamesons, Bushmills and Kilkenny.
The Last WordA locals pub to be sure, but friendly and fun too, especially when there’s a music night on and a few whiskeys lined up along the bar. A must for Irish sports fans and anyone who loves a good drink and a bed withing staggering distance.
