The ViewBrighton Review
The Duke of Wellington is the type of pub which students dream about whiling away many an hour in, whilst longstanding regulars scheme as to how they can keep such a diamond in the rough to themselves. Happily, both seem content to rub shoulders here. The VenueA tad further down from The Eddy is The Duke Of Wellington. The pub has been on its present site for the past 24 years (after moving from across the road) and a recent refurb has brought it nicely up to date. Light and bright from the wood floor to its beige, cream and light-coloured wood panelling, the pub is now refreshingly airy. Out the back there's a beer garden with a small selection of tables and hanging baskets of carefully thought out flower arrangements.
There's a pool table in a back room in the back as well as Sky TV for sports enthusiasts. As well as a regular crowd, punters include nearby office workers and some passing trade but the Duke of Wellington is only set to get more popular as it's in the process of applying to extend its licence at weekends.
The PeopleTrendily clad students who have clearly spent far longer than is healthy getting ready to go out for a night down the pub sit alongside seen-it-all-before regulars but there's a happy camaraderie that makes any evening here a relaxed one.
The Food and DrinkBeers on draught include Stella, Becks, Guinness, Kronenbourg, Bombardier and Sussex Best. There are pizzas which are baked in a wood-fired oven which come in at around £6.00-£8.00 as well as snacks, salads and bruschettas for £3.00-£5.00 and tasty desserts to round a meal off nicely, such as Charlotte Orange Torte.
The Last WordVastly improved after a refurb, The Duke Of Wellington is just off the main drag and now well worth a visit.
