The ViewBrighton Review
The Geese has one of the most eyecatching exteriors of any pub in Brighton and the inside's pretty popular with locals too. However, The Geese Have Gone Over Water is a mouthful of a name even before you've had a few so it's no wonder that everyone knows the pub simply as The Geese. The venueThe facade of The Geese must be one of the most striking in Brighton with its bright purple and white paint job. Considered by many to be the best Irish pub in Brighton, it was originally called The Geese Have Gone Over The Water, a reference to the Wild Geese (the Irish army who fought William of Orange in the 17th Century). When the army were given the option of execution or exile to France they fled 'over the water'. Inside, a recent paint job has introduced a fresher white, cream and beige colour scheme but although the decor is female friendly this pub is still essentially one for the boys. Come match days, footie is beamed onto the big screens and the pub is full of lively banter.
The PeopleIf you're new to the area and you want to get to know your neighbours then all you need to do is spend a few nights at The Geese. Every man and his dog in the area seems to drop by for a pint and a catch up with their neighbours which makes a refreshingly friendly change to some of the more central Brighton pubs.
The Food and DrinkThere's a good range of beers on tap including Stella, Fosters, Kronenbourg, Stowford Press, Harveys, Addlestones, Staropramen and Leffe, amongst others. There's also Bulmers, Corona, Carlsberg and Becks in bottles. The food menu isn't going to set the local foodies a flutter but it is reliably tasty and consists of fairly traditional pub fare such as sausage and mash, cod and chips and Guinness and steak pie.
The Last WordAlready a hit with locals, The Geese continues to welcome more customers into its gaggle.
