The ViewBrighton Review
Chin, chin! Time to raise a glass to one of Brighton's finest bars. The VenueWith its white brick facade and outdoor seating, Gingin (on the corner of Lower Rock Gardens and St James's Street) is one of Kemptown's most talked about bars. The bar tends to be quite quiet during weekday daytimes, but it more than comes into its own over the weekend with people crammed inside and out enjoying a cocktail-fuelled good time.
Independently owned, it's all leather sofas, big mirrors and chandeliers and has religious iconography adorning the walls (the owner's penchant allegedly). It's very bright and even offers a small glimpse of the sea from the far end of the narrow pub. Most interesting however, is the tucked-away little bar downstairs. Dark, low key, intriguing and inviting, it has its own bar and barman.
The PeopleYou haven't done the Brighton bar scene until you've been a regular at Gingin. Kemptown is well known for its up-for-it party vibe and the regulars at Gingin certainly aren't letting the side down.
The Food and DrinkGingin has Erdinger, San Miguel and Poretti on draught and there's a good cocktail list to tuck into too, including the house special Gingin Palace and a Limoncello cocktail made from the Italian liqueur and champagne. A small snack menu (duck and mushroom pate, selection of salamis, smoked salmon etc) offers far more unusual choices than your average bar menu and at less than a fiver the dishes are great value too.
The Last WordIf you pride yourself on knowing the Brighton bar scene inside out then it's high time you checked out Gingin. One of Brighton's unsung gems.
