The ViewBrighton Review
One of the more traditional pubs to be found in The Lanes, The Globe offers atmospheric drinking over two floors. The VenueIt’s welcoming and warm with candles on the tables in the evening and decorated in mustard yellows and deep reds with a copper-panelled ceiling, ornate mirrors and a chandelier. There is a library-styled room downstairs with its own bar and comfy sofas and armchairs. Not wallowing too much in the past, it also has wireless, as well as a computer for customer use which is popular with students who can't tear themselves away from Facebook for more than a few moments.
Mid-week there is occasionally live music whilst on Fridays and Saturdays it's open till the early hours. The lower ground floor is available for private hire and makes a change from the usual contemporary bars.
The PeopleAnyone with a strong sense of nostalgia drinks at The Globe although come the end of the week the live music acts draw in a livelier crowd which makes a nice change from the sleepy atmosphere the rest of the week.
The Food and DrinkThere’s Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Fosters, Strongbow, Stowford Press, Guinness, Bombardier, IPA on draught and Staropramen, Becks, Brahma, Baltika, Budvar, Bulmers, Kopparberg, Green Goblin and Jacks in bottles. Wine-wise there are four whites, four reds and three roses. The food menu is changing for the better with the recent appointment of a new head chef, who previously worked under Marco Pierre White. For now dishes include corned beef hash (£5.95) and, poached cod and risotto (£7.50).
The Last WordA comfortable and homely pub in the centre of town with a fast-improving menu.
