The ViewBrighton Review
It doesn't serve the finest food and drink but what it has got going for it is a prime location slap bang in the middle of student sharer territory. The VenueA cavernous pub on the busy London Road at its junction with Viaduct Road, the current landlord and landady have done a lot of dispel The Hare and Hounds previously dodgy reputation. There are live gigs every Saturday night, as well as open mic sessions on Wednesdays and live jazz on a Sunday. Food is served most days from noon till 4pm and again from 6pm - 9pm.
There are newspapers dotted around the pub to keep students entertained when they're not too busy challenging each other to a game at one of the two pool tables. However, on Tuesday nights the pub is packed to the gills with hustlers when the pool tables are free to use. There's a new decked area outside which is bordered with bamboo sticks and plants to conceal some of the pub's less than salubrious surroundings.
The PeopleFrom freshers to final year students, the Hare and Hounds is popular with students from both Brighton and Sussex universities who live in shared houses in the surrounding streets. Pool fanatics aren't in short supply either who start an evening off here before trickling down the road to Rileys pool hall.
The Food and DrinkFlowers, Spitfire, Guinness, Strongbow, Stella Artois, Carlsberg, Heineken, John Smiths, Grolsch and Fosters are all on tap. As for bottles there’s all the usual suspects including Grolsch, San Miguel, Becks, Corona, Magners and Bulmers. The food is standard student fare although a step up from packet noodles and includes curries, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, Ploughmans and fish and chips, all reasonably priced from £1.50-£6.00.
The Last WordThe Hare and Hounds has benefitted from a change in management but is still most popular with students who fancy spending night after night sinking cheap pints and shooting pool.
