The ViewBrighton Review
One of Brighton’s most inspiring places to hang out, OHSO Social rises to the top of the heap when it comes to enjoying food on the seafront. The VenueWalk down East Street, head onto the beach and you'll come across a restaurant and bar that benefits from some magnificent, uninterrupted views of Brighton Pier and the sea which stretches off onto the horizon. Take a meander along the promenade or work up an appetite on the kitschy fairground rides and games before kicking back and getting stuck into the food.
The outside decking seats dozens of diners during the summer months whilst inside the restaurant is an eclectic collection of leather, velvet effect banquettes and candleabras.
The AtmosphereA real family place that's always filled with lots of happy children, OHSO Social is nevertheless a calm, tranquil environment in which to while away a morning or a lazy summer’s afternoon. Grab a spot on the outdoor terrace area and let your worries just fade away as you gaze out to sea.
The FoodThe variety of menus on offer tick the boxes from breakfast right through to dinner. Kicking things off are eggs served either Royale, with toasted muffins, smoked salmon and a creamy hollandaise sauce or Florentine with soft, wilted spinach. There's also fresh yoghurt and muesli as well as a choice of fresh juices which are popular with tourists from the nearby hotels during the week and locals at weekends. Meanwhile the daytime menu includes a tasty homemade soup of the day served with warm bread, chargrilled tiger prawns in a sharp ginger and garlic marinade accompanied by stir-fried vegetables and jasmine rice and home-made crab and coriander fish cakes that are deliciously crispy. The beautifully presented whole baked rainbow trout served with a tangy lemon butter and creamy mushroom risotto takes some beating, however. Desserts include an unusual white chocolate creme brulee and indulgent profiteroles served with chocolate fudge sauce but you'll need a sweet tooth to finish either dish.
The DrinkOHSO Social boasts an impressive cocktail list and a respectable wine list to boot. The classic cocktails including Bramble (a mixture of gin, fresh lemon juice and vanilla sugar served over crushed ice with a Chambord float) and Bellinis created from fresh peaches and peach nectar topped off with Champagne. There are also home brews available that include the aptly named Dirty Weekend (rum, lime juice, apples, pears, cacao and vanilla). As for the wines, the creamy, soft and fruity Chenin from South Africa goes well with most dishes as does a light Spanish rose, Fortius Rosado.
The Last WordWith its incredible beachfront location and freshly prepared dishes OHSO Social is certainly one of the most sophisticated social spots that you'll find on the seafront.
