The ViewBrighton Review
A 1930s' pub that prides itself on encouraging good old fashioned manners, the Rose Hill Tavern started life as a couple of houses. The VenueComing into its existence as a pub when two houses were knocked into one, the Rose Hill Tavern dates back to the to the 1930s when it was under the United Ales banner (their logo is still outside). It has the air of a stylish classic old pub thanks to its dark green tiled facade, Victorian-style lamps and stained glass windows.
There's a raised patio at the front that's popular with smokers and sun worshippers but if you're after character you need to head inside where the pub is arranged over a split level. The front bar only accommodates around 20 people so come the evenings it's going to be snug and you're best off heading into the pool room which fits in another fifty people or so. Despite its cream walls it's fairly dark due to the stained glass windows and wood panelling. The open fireplace is incredibly popular on chilly evenings and the overspill retire to the small back patio, which is covered. The manager obviously takes a lot of pride in the pub and it extends to the atmosphere too - it's a no-swearing pub so watch your language!
The PeopleThe locals who drink here are thankfully a polite lot so they manage to stay in the manager's good books. One thing that the drinkers of all ages have in common is their love of fine ale and calm surroundings making it the ideal place for a relaxing pint.
The Food and DrinkStella, Heineken, Fosters, Amstel, Guinness, Stowford Press, Harveys line up alongside several ales on rotation such as London Pride, Old Speckled Hen and Flowers Original. Kopparberg, Holsten Pils, Budweiser and Magners are all also available but in bottles. Food ranges from snacks such as paninis, nachos, melts and toasties, as well as filled Yorkshire puddings, curries, Ploughmans and vegetarian options, all from as little as £2.50.
The Last WordWith its excellent service, sense of class and warm, welcoming atmosphere, the Rosehill Tavern is a gem that once you've sampled it could easily become your favourite local.
