The ViewBrighton Review
Not a destination pub, The Royal Standard is however, a solid boozer for dropping into if you're in need of a post-commute pint. The VenueThe street leading to the station has a few decent places to drop by as soon as you set foot outside the railway station. The Royal Standard is best spotted by its outside seating under parasols and its rather traditional air. It's a pleasant little place with big bay windows and just the one room. There's Sky Sports on the TV so you'll never miss a minute of the match but it still manages to maintain a laid-back, understated calm.
The PeopleIf you're one of the city's many commuters, chances are that as soon as you step off the train you're gasping for a pint to blur the edges off yet another stressful journey. Fellow commuters pull up a pew at the Royal Standard, gulping their pints down thirstily in the hope that they'll then consider themselves safe to be let back out onto the streets of Brighton without elbowing their fellow residents out of the way whilst shrieking, 'For God's sake, stop ambling, time is money dontcha know!'. Thankfully, the pub seems to do the trick and you'll see contented smiles spreading across your fellow drinkers' faces as the amber nectar goes to work.
The Food and DrinkGrolsch, Carling, Worthing, Stella, Guinness, Sussex Best Bitter and London Pride are all on draught and there are deals to be had on all bottled beers from Monday to Friday between 4pm and 7pm that tend to prove popular with nearby businesses. The food isn't worth writing home about but it's not terrible either with a choice of reliable favourites such as moussaka and chilli con carne.
The Last WordThe Royal Standard doesn't shout about itself from the rooftops and it's all the better for it. A solid choice for a post-commute pint.
