The ViewBrighton Review
The Star and Sailor combined olde worlde charm with cool Brighton kitsch to ensure that it stands out from the pack - and it certainly works. The VenueOn the corner of Western Road and Temple Street, this site was dying a slow death in its former incarnation as The Temple Bar. Now under new ownership, the transformation couldn’t be greater. From a pedestrian pool-table and TV pub, The Star and Sailor now attracts Brighton's trendiest set thanks to its clever combination of style and substance. The impressive facade is painted in imposing burgundy and black with gold writing and the front been opened up so that it is now an expanse of glass.
Inside it's a charming combination light grey painted wood-panelled walls, exposed brickwork, low leather sofas, chandeliers and mirrors on the walls. The upstairs area, that's available for events and private parties, is lovely with a similar design to downstairs. There's also seating out the front and a small smoking terrace at the back which closes at 10pm. In fact, the pub has managed to tick every box without making any of it seem like hard work.
The PeopleAlthough busy all week, things start to really kick off at the weekend when workers from Brighton's creative industries shrug off the working week, determined to have a seriously good time.
The Food and DrinkFood is a big deal here with a delicious snacks menu (Sussex honey pate, fresh sardines, nachos) at £2 to £3 a dish, as well as more substantial meals (rainbow trout, lamb, burgers) for £6 to £7. As for the drinks, it's mainly pints of Becks, Leffe London Pride, Bombardier and Guinness.
The Last WordA vast improvement on its previous guise, The Star and Sailor has already got an established clientele of fans who known a good thing when they see it. If you're wise, you'll join them.
