The ViewBrighton Review
Hiding its light under a bushel, The George is Brighton's very own vegetarian pub, but it doesn't like to shout about it.The VenueAs well as boasting one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the UK (Terre a Terre), Brighton also has its own vegetarian and vegan pub. Looking far brighter after a recent refurb, the pub has several different rooms branching off from the main area. There's a heated outside space at the back which is ideal for catering to the inevitable overflow but despite having garnered plenty of accolades, The George is still a fairly low-key affair.
The PeopleAs you'd expect The George is packed full of hungry vegetarians and vegans but there are also loads of the city's savvy meat eaters who know a good pub when they see it and aren't going to let a meat-free policy stand in their way.
The Food and DrinkThere's Guinness and Stella on draught and a good range of organic and vegan red and white wines which supposedly prevent such excruciating hangovers although that perhaps depends on how much you drink. The George ticks all the boxes and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Main dishes (think pasta, Thai green curry, onion tart) are about £5, but there's also a good selection of (vegetarian) sandwiches, salads, wraps and pittas for less. It's child friendly (they're welcome till 7pm) and there's also a special kids menu so that you can start them young.
The Last WordThe George is an understated, low-key, child friendly veggie pub which you won't be able to stop yourself shouting about whether you're meat-free or otherwise.
