The ViewBrighton Review

If you've abandoned all hope of ever finding a live music venue that isn't so niche that you feel you have to dress the part merely to drop by for a pint, this bar could well be the answer to your problems.

The Venue
Decor wise there's nothing remarkable about the bar downstairs, just a predictable smattering of large sofas but it's upstairs that the magic happens so hole up at the aptly named Hope Live for live music from a dizzyingly eclectic range of bands. The upstairs is also available for private hire and is well known as the scene of some of Brighton's more memorable parties. Put it this way, people are more likely to be found heading up the stairs with guitar cases than briefcases.

The People
As a bar dedicated to music, The Hope was always going to be very popular with indie kids and rockers. However, its location on the main route between the station and the town centre means it also attracts a mixed crowd of non music fanatics especially during the day at weekends. There are quite a few throwbacks to the days when the bar used to be Polar Central and a popular student haunt too which adds to the eclectic mix.

The Food and Drink
On draught there's Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Guinness, Westons Cider, Directors, Bombardier, Strongbow and Fosters. There's also a good range of bottled ciders and beers available. As for the food, the only option is pizza but it's good pizza cooked in a specially installed oven.

The Last Word
Many years ago the venue used to be The Lift which was a haven for Brighton's muso fraternity. Today, The Hope may be more inclusive but its dedication to live music is just as heartfelt.
