The ViewBrighton Review
Ideal for whiling away the daylight hours with a couple of games of pool and a long yarn over a few pints of the usual, The Rock is a proper locals pub.The VenueThe Rock is a friendly pub poplar with locals who look as though not only have they been coming here for years, their seat should have their name on it. There are a couple of benches and tables out the front but most of the regulars prefer to sit inside. The dark floorboards and red and cream walls hark back to a decade time forgot but all in all the pub's decor creates a comfortable lived-in feel.
Downstairs there's a private room which can be hired by regulars to host their own private shindig although everyone's so friendly here they'll probably end up being invited to the party anyway. There's also handily an open-air area out the back complete with big flower pots and potted plants for summertime or smokers which does the job of making the best of a fairly uninspiring outdoor area.
The PeopleUnusually busy in the day, The Rock is very much a regulars pub for a pint or two and catching up on chat. Expect to see the most unexpected combinations of people huddled in groups setting the world to rights throughout the afternoon although if you're not a regular keep your eyes open for late arrivals hovering near your table - chances are that you're sitting in the seat that they've proudly occupied for the last decade.
The Food and DrinkThe choice of draught is a fairly limited but solid selection - Fosters, Strongbow, Kronenbourg, Becks, Scrumpy Jack and Guinness. Food is served in two sittings during the day (12pm-3pm and 6pm-9pm) and consists of crispy filled Yorkshire puddings, tapas, baguettes and seafood platters. There's no theme for the menu here aside from tasty food.
The Last WordThe Rock is a very popular pub with the locals - a mixed bunch in the best possible way. If this is your local, you're laughing.
