The ViewBrighton Review
Named after Kemp Town's namesake, what was once Polar East now has a darker more serious decor to reflect the importance of its name but the suntrap garden is still exactly the same and just as popular. The VenueNamed after the 19th Century local political figure who gave his name to the area, Kemp Town's Thomas Kemp has undergone a serious makeover since its days as Polar East. There are dark wooden floorboards, dark tables and chairs, old maps on the wall and a suit of armour standing to attention in the corner. The sun-trap beer garden at the back is one of Kemp Town's most popular watering spots during the summer, while the windows at the front and back are thrown open during the summer. There's live music, open mic and DJ nights too at weekends.
The PeopleKemp Town locals from students to professionals fill the bar every night of the week although the crowd is mainly young and upbeat.
The Food and DrinkSan Miguel, Kronenbourg and Guinness are some of the beers on draught, but there's an equal emphasis on wines and cocktails. Food ranges from snacks like sandwiches, toasties and salads to dishes such as lentil curry, tuna steak and bangers and mash alongside weekly specials. However, it's the Sunday roast that's the runaway success weekend after weekend with portions large enough to see off even the severest of hangovers.
The Last WordThe Thomas Kemp is a sleek bar that ticks all the boxes, but service with a smile is sometimes lacking due to the constant turnover at tables and at the bar.
