The ViewBrighton Review
Organic is the order of the day at Bills Produce Store that serves up perfectly prepared old British classics. The VenueBills Produce Store is a visually impressive establishment that looks like it's bursting with health, you can practically see those vitamins leaping out at you. Styled like a traditional market, there are always several displays of fruit and vegetables. To the sides are big shelving units crammed full of all sorts of goodies from juices and marinades to sauces that will suit any occasion. The slate flooring and the rustic wooden tables and chairs that make up the eating area create a homely effect and there is also a mezzanine level if you want to survey the bustling store and cafe from loftier heights.
The AtmosphereThere is always a constant buzz at Bills as throngs of diners make their way in and out of the doors. This is already a firm favourite with ladies who lunch although there's nothing frivolous about the cafe as the local foodie set who are also constantly sitting in attendance can bear testament.
The FoodThe true beauty of this place is that they deliver and execute honest, uncomplicated dishes that tick off all the classics. For breakfast, there's a wealth of choice on offer including crunchy homemade muesli with yoghurt, fruit, nuts and honey; sausage sandwiches and even baked beans on toast. All ingredients are organic which ensures first rate freshness. It's the simple touches that really make the dishes stand out however, such as fried egg, bacon and hp sauce piled onto homemade flatbread or Bills vegetarian breakfast (toast, poached egg, tomatoes, homemade hummus, avocado and mushrooms with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
Eggs are served in every possible combination from fluffy scrambled eggs on toast with bacon or smoked salmon to cheddar Buck Rarebit with a traditional combination of ham and a fried egg or simpy the childhoof favourite of a boiled egg and soldiers.
But it's not just about breakfast that Bills Produce Store is famed for. Throughout the day, locals pop in for fresh buttermilk pancakes with sticky maple syrup and crumpets accompanied by an unusual blackberry flavoured butter. Although Bills fish finger sandwich is the runaway success.
The DrinkAs you'd expect, the cafe pays just as much attention to the drinks. Teas include earl grey, assam and rooibosh but you can't leave your table without sampling the aggafredo, a scoop of vanilla ice cream with double espresso coffee. When you've had your caffeine kick, there are also daily smoothies, crushes and milkshakes of the day. The organic blueberry cordial with chopped kiwi served hot or cold is very refreshing. During lunch, most diners pick from the range of organic wines that include a silky, deep Aroa deierri 2002.
The Last WordThis is what all Brighton dining should be like. Bills Produce Store's variety and quality of produce is second to none and its attention to even the smallest details is the secret to its continued success.
