The ViewBrighton Review
A unique 100 per cent vegetarian fast food outlet, Red Veg offers a fine choice of burgers, sausages and other tasty options for non meat eaters. The VenueRed Veg is situated in the midst of the North Laines and it's a small, permanently busy affair. Its tiny interior is decked out with robust red chairs, metallic finished tables and a fast food style ordering counter that's not going to set the design world alight but does the job admirably.
The AtmosphereAttracting students in their droves, as the style of the restaurant suggests you are not really here for a culinary experience but there’s a gentle chatter about busy university lives or what hotspot to hit on the weekend so it's not quite as earnest as you'd imagine a veggie burger bar to be.
The FoodIf you're in need of a quick veggie fix then you're in luck. The coriander and chilli pesto is fragrant, the vegetable bolognese pasta is wholesome and the curried lentils are spicy and pungent. There is a good choice of burgers to sink your teeth into. Choose from the Red Veg burger with cheese or the Chilli Veg burger which offers a real kick at the end. Try one of the burger add ons to jazz them up - guacamole and marinated roasted red peppers both score high marks.
The vegwursts are their own vegetarian sausages and make a great snack when served in a classic hot dog bun. Make sure you ask for some caramelised onions and a generous squeeze of both ketchup and mustard. Authentic falafel wraps come with a tangy lemon and coriander filling, houmous, tahini, red chilli relish and salad. Other options feature a Greek salad wrap with sundried tomato, roasted peppers, feta cheese and black olives which really gives this an extra piquancy and some spicy potato wedges which are sizzling hot to the taste as well as the touch.
The DrinkTo quench your thirst, there's a range of soft drinks including some freshly squeezed juices straight from the chiller cabinet alongside the likes of iced tea.
The Last WordRed Veg offers a good alternative to the usual meat-biased fast food joints and the food is as tasty as the restaurant is appealing.
