The ViewBrighton Review
Refresh your head in between shops with a juicy smoothie. For health conscious shoppers, who want a break from the ringing cash registers. The VenueSejuice manages to combines 1950s' styling with cosy contemporary and somehow it works. From the outside, the curvaceous Fifties pin-up on the sign invites you inside, where you are bombarded with the food and drink on offer on two opposing walls. The busy counter at the front allows the predominantly takeaway customers to order and leave, so those eating in can relax at the back at the few tables and comfy couches. The slender shop front widens at the back, with attic windows letting in lots of light.
The AtmosphereThe seating area at the back is relaxing and quiet most of the day, until lunchtime when it gets pretty busy. Due to the lack of tables at Sejuice there isn’t much room to sit during lunch so many opt for takeaways. The clientele are a mix of students, shoppers and twenty-somethings, many of whom simply pop in for a smoothie to take it away. The young and trendy staff are friendly and swiftly mix drinks as soon as you order so even if you decide to eat in, you won't be waiting long.
The FoodThe food menu is strictly for lunch and snacking. Taking inspiration from the 1950s, the sandwiches and wraps made at Sejuice have been given quirky names to suit the character of their combined ingredients – Zorba The Greek (Mediterranean vegetables and cheese) and Marilyn Monroe (roasted chicken with basil and lime salad). Alternatively there are exotic salads and small bites, such as nachos and pitta bread with houmus. For those simply wanting an accompaniment to a hot drink, there is a choice of either cake or brownies, which admittedly could be boosted by offering a slightly wider selection.
The DrinkThe smoothies are the big appeal of Sejuice however, and are the main reason for many customers' visits. Amongst the ten cleverly-named drinks, many of which have been inspired by alcoholic cocktails, make sure you try the Brighton Royale (strawberry, banana, apple), Singapore Bling (mango, orange, frozen yoghurt) or Cosmopolitan Punch (strawberry, raspberry, banana, honey, cranberry and frozen yoghurt). Having said that the Mango Breeze is particularly moreish and includes a succulent blend of mango, raspberry and frozen yoghurt. Unlike some smoothie chains, Sejuice’s small and regular sized smoothies offer a decent sized slurp for your buck. However, it's not just smoothies on offer, there is a range of hot and cold drinks that includes herbal teas and chai.
The Last WordSejuice is an original, quirky cafe which offers a tantalising menu as a backdrop to its enticing smoothie menu. Take a break from shopping in the Laines and you'll leave perfectly refreshed and ready to shop another day.
