The ViewBrighton Review
A giant of a bar and restaurant directly overlooking the seafront and with a wraparound terrace, Terraces mops up most of the tourists who venture past Brighton Pier. The VenueThis gargantuan seafront bar that also houses a restaurant within the colossal venue boasts spectacular sea views and plenty of sunbathing space on the terrace in summer. Even in the winter months you can still soak up those views thanks to large floor to ceiling windows. In fact, Terraces is easily one of the best places to pick for a view of the sunset over the sea. It's modern design can seem a little clinical compared to many of the city's quirky bars set within the arches at the other end of the seafront but its circular form over two levels with decked wrap around terraces isn't offensive.
The PeopleTourists and students whose parents are visiting seem to make up the majority of wave after wave of people lining up to bag a table, especially in summer. Don't be too polite when it comes to letting other people jump the queue in front of you or you'll be waiting for the best part of an hour.
The Food and DrinkIt's table service only at Terraces which succeeds in making the experience more civilised but it can be frustrating when you're gasping and can't get a quick drink whilst you're waiting to order your food. If you don't fancy a few cool pints or a crisp glass of wine there's still plenty of choice. The cocktails are well made and generally come in at around £5. Pimms is also available by the jug (a popular choice) but there are some more unusual options including Mango Lada (Malibu, pineapple juice, mango syrup and cream) and Vanilla Berry which is the bar and grill's signature cocktail comprising of vanilla vodka, strawberry liqueur, cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime.
The location also makes Terraces a popular choice for food with students generally opting for the pasta at around £6 a dish, or the burgers at a couple of quid more. However, be warned. A sirloin steak will set you back £16.95 which is more than a little overpriced for the steak that you get - you're certainly paying a premium for the location and given that service can be incredibly slow particularly in summer it may leave a slightly bitter taste in your mouth.
The Last WordThe view is good but there are better, more reasonably priced and more interesting bars in the area. With a view this good the food and drink have a lot to live up to and unfortunately Terraces falls slightly short of the mark. Best left to the tourists.
